Response to President Trump’s Remarks on Gang Violence

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This afternoon President Trump spoke about gang violence before federal, state and local law enforcement at Suffolk County Community College in New York. The following is a statement from Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum:

“No one, immigrants included, wants gangs to threaten their community. We need to ensure that immigrant communities are helping law enforcement officials root out gang members and keep everyone safe. If your neighbor suspects gang activity on your street but won’t call the police because he’s scared his brother will be deported, that’s not keeping you safer.

“Effective law enforcement treats immigrants as partners, not enemies, in fighting crime.”
