WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democrats are projected to gain control of the House of Representatives after midterm elections marked by a deeply polarizing immigration debate, while Republicans appear likely to maintain their majority in the Senate.
The following is a statement from Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum:
“In the end, President Trump’s strategy of ignoring the center and playing to his base by ginning up anti-immigrant angst – something we haven’t seen from a White House in the modern era – failed to keep suburban America in the Republican camp.
“As a result, Democrats will lead the House of Representatives.
“However, solutions are impossible without the support of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. It’s time for the House and Senate and the president to work in a bipartisan fashion to reach solutions that have broad support and will benefit all Americans, such as for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients.
“The majority of Americans are exhausted by the partisanship and polarization. In the years ahead, leaders from both parties have an opportunity to find immigration solutions that meet the needs of American workers and their families, and affirm our identity as a welcoming nation.”
