White House Plan Lays Foundation for Dialogue on Immigration

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced a new immigration proposal today that would drastically change the U.S. approach to immigration.

The White House has yet to release the details of the plan. Reports indicate that it will not address Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients, or non-immigrant visa holders.

“The administration’s plan recognizes that our country needs immigrants, and that they contribute to economic prosperity and innovation across the U.S.,” said Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum. “That is a strong starting principle on which to build a conversation around fixing our immigration system. However, with a declining birth rate and an economy that needs skilled workers across all sectors, we need broad solutions.

“The White House and Congress need to continue to work toward immigration solutions that meet our workforce needs; address Dreamers, the undocumented, and Temporary Protected Status recipients; keep families together; and effectively address the humanitarian situation at our southern border while ensuring our nation’s safety.”
