Voters: Improve Border Security, Update Asylum and Legal Immigration

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Just months before Election Day, voters remain stalwart in their support for Republicans and Democrats working together on border and immigration solutions.

In an August survey, the National Immigration Forum, in conjunction with The Bullfinch Group, asked, “Would you support or oppose Republicans and Democrats working together, this year, to pass immigration reforms that would get serious about improving border security, update our asylum system, and bring legal immigration into the 21st century so we can create more jobs and reduce labor shortages and inflation?”

Overall, 76% of registered voters expressed support for such solutions, with only 12% opposed. The remainder said they were unsure. The spread was 73%-18% among self-identified conservatives.

“Even amid a contentious election cycle, American voters want solutions now,” said Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum.

“Together with results showing that voters prefer solutions-focused candidates over those who fearmonger around immigration, the message is clear. Our leaders should have the difficult conversations and get reforms done. Leadership requires solving problems, not finding scapegoats.”
