Trump’s Wall a Symbol, Not a Solution

EL PASO, TEXAS — In response to President Trump’s declaration today of a national emergency at our southern border, the following is a statement from Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum. After visiting San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, earlier this week, Noorani is visiting the border in El Paso, Texas, today and is available for interview.

“We can talk about symbols or we can talk about solutions. Our southern border is more secure than ever and continues to see decreased levels of unauthorized entry, and border communities have some of the lowest rates of crime in the country.

“Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have raised serious concerns about Trump’s decision to declare a national emergency, which usurps the authority of Congress at the expense of a sustainable immigration compromise, does not make us safer and does not reflect the values of Americans.”
