Rule of Law, Due Process Are at Stake in Disappearances

Enforcement Rule of Law

At least two Venezuela-born men have disappeared after U.S. immigration officials detained them, according to reports in the Miami Herald and The New York Times. Both reportedly first entered the country lawfully.

“The rule of law and due process protect all of us, and they are at stake in these cases,” said Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum. “No one should disappear apparently at the hands of the federal government.

“Our immigration policies must follow the rule of law, protect due process and adhere to humane practices. People who receive a deportation order after due process should be deported. Actions that undercut due process will lead to a less orderly and effective immigration system and threaten our overall system of justice.

“The government must bring these cases, and any others like them, to light. And it must follow the rule of law.”
