New Travel Ban Contradicts American National Security Approach and Would Hurt Our Economy

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The White House announced a travel ban for 12 countries and partial restrictions for other seven other countries arguing national security and public safety threats. Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum released the following quote:

“This travel ban could undermine America’s global standing and will not make us safer. The restrictions are likely to have repercussions extending far beyond excluding nationals from the banned countries, making the U.S. a less appealing destination for businesses and tourists from across the globe.

“The travel ban could have negative impacts on key industries, including sectors of our workforce that depend on foreign workers harming directly American economy.

“While we are relieved that the ban includes limited exceptions for Afghan Special Immigrant Visa holders, certain Iranian religious minorities, and a few others, the ban is certain to restrict the entry of people fleeing danger and persecution.”
