WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Justice is considering imposing quotas on immigration court judges, according to a report today.
The following is a statement from Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum:
“The Department of Justice should be concerned with justice, not with pressuring overworked judges to expedite decisions. Quotas would join a list of misguided immigration enforcement priorities that fail Americans and the rule of law, as well as immigrants.
“The way to address the backlog in our immigration courts is to hire more judges and to make sure people have legal counsel. These two steps will ensure that cases are taken up sooner and that justice is served.
“Many people have credible immigration claims that we must address. We should not delay justice.”
