DREAM Act Would Benefit All Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The newly announced, bipartisan DREAM Act offers a legal solution for certain undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.

Sponsored by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) and Dick Durbin (D-Illinois), the DREAM Act would allow Dreamers to earn legalized status and a pathway toward eventual American citizenship if they meet certain requirements.

These criteria include graduating from high school or earning a GED; pursuing higher education, working lawfully for at least three years or serving in the military; passing background checks; and demonstrating proficiency in English and a knowledge of U.S. history.

The following is a statement by Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum:

“This is the kind of bipartisan legislative solution we need. It would provide certainty not only to young immigrants but also to Americans who know them as colleagues, neighbors and friends.

“Support for this kind of solution runs deep, even among Trump supporters. The DREAM Act would replace temporary executive action and provide an effective way for Dreamers to earn legal status and eventual citizenship. Americans who work and study alongside them will continue to benefit.”
