WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today Reps. Tom Suozzi (D-NY-03) and Morgan Luttrell (R-TX-08) announced that they are building a coalition to craft urgent border security and immigration reforms.
The effort will focus on three areas: increasing border security, updating our asylum system, and improving legal immigration in a way that benefits all Americans.
In April, seven Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus (ANIC) member organizations released a Border Security and Management Framework, the components of which have overwhelming support among voters.
The following is a statement from the ANIC following today’s announcement:
“We appreciate Congressmen Suozzi and Luttrell’s courage in starting this conversation. The cynicism and partisanship that have long dominated the border and immigration conversation have hurt Americans by preventing the solutions they desperately want and need.
“The congressmen’s starting point is spot-on: bringing more order to the challenges at the border and in our asylum system by increasing security and upholding human dignity. They also recognize that we have to update our immigration system so that we can reduce pressure at the border, meet our labor needs to strengthen our economy, keep inflation in check, and give workers and employers greater stability.
“Americans strongly support principled and pragmatic solutions. We stand ready to work with Suozzi, Luttrell, and all members of Congress who want to work in good faith to address these challenges.”
