Congress Should Focus on Practical Solutions, Not Impeach Mayorkas

Washington, D.C. — House impeachment managers are expected to formally present the charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate tomorrow. National security leaders and the National Immigration Forum reiterate their call on Congress to focus instead on border and immigration solutions.

Council on National Security and Immigration (CNSI) leaders said in February that seeking Mayorkas’ impeachment is “a misguided approach” that could set an adverse precedent. “A partisan impeachment based on policy disagreements will exacerbate existing polarization and risks undercutting our national security,” the leaders said. “Bolstering our security means doing the difficult work of good-faith negotiations to update the current, outdated policy framework.”

“The challenges at the border and the need for modernizing our immigration system are still pending action from Congress,” said Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum. “We urge Congress to invest energy on solutions that will further secure our border and treat migrants with dignity.”

Early this year, 26 national security leaders who served in Republican and Democratic administrations sent a letter to Congress expressing their concerns over the then pending impeachment of Mayorkas and its potential impact on national security. The leaders also called on legislative actions to address migration challenges.

Separately, the Forum recently launched A Better Way Forward: 2024 Immigration Principles to foster an immigration conversation that can lead to bipartisan efforts.
