Concerns Surround Immigration Legislation Ahead of Trump’s Meeting

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This afternoon President Trump is scheduled to meet with congressional Republicans as two Republican immigration bills are pending in the House. The following is a statement by Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum, ahead of that meeting:

“As it stands now, neither of the bills before the House addresses our core concerns. In the current environment, Congress must explicitly end and prevent family separation and the indefinite detention of children. Second, legislation should strengthen, not undermine or constrict, our legal immigration system. Finally, the proposal should broadly encompass the dreams and aspirations of Dreamers.

“We hope Republicans reach across the aisle to pass immigration legislation that serves the interests of American workers and their families. It is clear the status quo is neither sustainable nor humane.”
