The City of Houston is known for its large population, thriving economy, and rich culture. In order to keep such a vibrant city running smoothly, its local government fulfills numerous responsibilities and continuously looks out for its district, citizens and employees. One recent example of this dedication occurred when the City of Houston partnered with New American Workforce with the aim of promoting its employees’ success and assisting those that are eligible for United States citizenship with the process at their worksite.
Since the start of this partnership, the City of Houston and New American Workforce have helped numerous employees, including Ricardo Magdaleno, who is a Senior Superintendent at the Mayor’s Office of Special Events. At the age of three, Ricardo moved to the U.S. from Monterrey, Mexico, because his father was working in Houston and wanted to relocate his family to the area in search of greater opportunities. Although Ricardo now has had his green card for nearly 44 years, it was only after hearing about his employer’s partnership with New American Workforce that he feel confident to apply for his citizenship. He believed that his citizenship would ensure his family’s well-being and security. He has two children and when considering their future, he thought, “now is the time to apply for citizenship.”
Through the City of Houston’s partnership with New American Workforce, Ricardo attended citizenship workshops in October 2017 and filled out his application at his worksite. He now feels “confident going into the [citizenship] interview” and reflects fondly back on his journey.
“Everyone at the workshops was all very kind. There was an attorney who was very supportive and helpful throughout the process. I still have the email and contacts of those who helped me throughout the process, so whenever I have a question or problem, I just contact them, which I find very comforting.”
Ricardo has been eagerly waiting to hear back about his application for the past eight months, but he is hopeful that he will become a citizen soon. In return for the City of Houston’s support throughout the citizenship process, he plans to continue passionately working at Mayor’s Office throughout years to come.
