Appeals Court Rejects Refugee, Travel Bans

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals largely upheld a judge’s ruling blocking President Trump’s ban on refugees as well as on travel from six Muslim-majority countries.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ issued a similar ruling May 25, which the Trump administration has since appealed to the Supreme Court.

Today’s ruling also addresses the refugee ban, continuing to block that section of the executive order as well. Notably, the court also cited tweets from President Trump earlier this month in which he referred to his “travel ban.”

The following is a statement from Ali Noorani, Executive Director at the National Immigration Forum:

“The discriminatory intent of the proposed travel ban remains clear, and the courts are having none of it.

“Beyond their likely unlawfulness, refugee and travel bans send the wrong statement to the world. They undermine our national security, not to mention our values, and they hurt our economy.

“Our safety and security are priority No. 1. The administration can and should review its vetting procedures. But these proposed bans are not the way to prioritize real threats at home and abroad.”
