ANIC Members Renew Call for Congress to Act Following the Death of at least 50 Migrants in Texas

Washington, D.C. (June 30, 2022)  –  The Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus (ANIC) released the following statement today calling for immediate action by Congress following the tragic death of at least 50 migrants outside of San Antonio, Texas:

“We are heartbroken by this tragic loss of so many lives, and our thoughts and prayers are with the young children and families who remain in the hospital,” said ANIC, a bipartisan coalition of 36 faith, business, agriculture and other advocacy organizations. “With renewed urgency, we call on Congress to act this year on bipartisan solutions to restore order at the border.”

“Congressional gridlock is empowering smugglers who have no interest in the well-being or safety of migrants to act with impunity along our southern border. The longer that Congress and the Biden Administration fail to address these issues in a bipartisan fashion, the more likely it is that we will see more tragedies like this moving forward.

Congress must act now to stop a crisis that is leading to loss of lives at record numbers near the U.S.-Mexico border. A significant majority of Americans want increased investments along the southern border as well as immigration reforms that encourage and provide more legal immigration channels.”

On February 28, the National Immigration Forum published a poll that found 8 in 10 voters want common-sense solutions in 2022 that include border security, an opportunity to earn legal status and citizenship for undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children, and a legal, reliable workforce for America’s farmers and ranchers.
