WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a new Medium post today, Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration, calls for vigilance and mutual responsibility in protecting our American values in the wake of the tragic attack in Orlando.

Still reeling from this weekend, members of Latino, LGBT and other directly impacted communities are seeking comfort.

Others, however, are seeking a scapegoat. But that is no way to move forward productively as a nation based on the values of inclusion, freedom and civil liberty. Instead, we must stand ever stronger to protect our country’s ideals.

“We must all be vigilant in protecting the American values we hold dear. Our freedoms of religion, speech, love. These are the freedoms that define western civilization, that have always made America great. These are the freedoms radical Islamism seeks to destroy,” writes Noorani.

“If we are not vigilant in our protection of these freedoms, the terrorists will have won. And our civilization, and everything we hold dear, will be no better than theirs.

“… Now more than ever, our nation’s civic leaders, from the White House to City Hall, need to lead by example. They must make the case that as members of this experiment we call America, whether you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, atheist or otherwise, we have a mutual responsibility to extend our hands to each other. Hold them. Squeeze them.

“Let us help each other to be our better selves.”
