New Bipartisan Bill Would Provide Dreamer Solution

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today Reps. Will Hurd (R-Texas) and Pete Aguilar (D-California) introduced a bill that would provide conditional permanent resident status for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and other Dreamers.

The Uniting and Securing America (USA) Act also would heighten border security measures, provide more immigration judges and appeals attorneys to reduce backlogs, and address the root causes of migration of unaccompanied children from Central America.

With the Friday budget deadline looming in Congress, momentum continues for lawmakers to finalize a solution this week. Dreamers and local leaders in Iowa and Florida and a local columnist in Alabama have written pieces this week calling on Congress for a permanent solution. Last week, evangelical leaders sent a letter asking Congress to pass a legislative solution for Dreamers without further delay.

“This bill represents the positive momentum we need from both sides of the aisle. We applaud Reps. Hurd and Aguilar for their leadership in introducing this legislation,” said Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum. “This week’s deadline is real. Congress must prioritize the solution Dreamers need and the vast majority of Americans support.”
