Asbury Methodist Village: Jane’s Participant Testimonial

The process of applying for United States citizenship can be intimidating and complex for many eligible green card holders. However, it is especially difficult for those who are working to improve their English, as complicated legal jargon often acts as a barrier to naturalization. Jane, for example, emigrated from Kenya to the U.S. in the 1980’s and has worked at Asbury Methodist Village for the past 24 years. Ever since she first arrived in the country, she has wanted to become a citizen in order to secure her rights and safety. In 2003, she applied for her citizenship for the first time. While Jane speaks English at work, the specific language used in the citizenship interview was difficult and she was unable to pass the exam.

Fortunately, Jane’s employer, Asbury Methodist Village, partnered with New American Workforce, which assists the Maryland-based retirement community’s diverse workforce with the citizenship process. After attending the partnership’s citizenship workshops and further practicing her English, Jane was reenergized to apply for her citizenship again. She said she felt more confident about the process and was excited for her decades-old dream to become a reality.

Through Asbury Methodist Village’s partnership with New American Workforce, Jane completed her citizenship application at her worksite. The fact that her employer helped facilitate these citizenship workshops meant a great deal. Their support showed her how much they care,

“[This partnership] tells their employees they care about them. They want us to grow and be better.”

Though Jane has waited nearly 40 years to become a citizen, she says the wait is worth it and is one-step closer to her dream.
