Administration Targets Legal Immigrants Despite Diplomats’ Warnings

Clock Is Ticking for 1 Million Legal Immigrants

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Reports have emerged this evening that the administration’s decision to end temporary protected status (TPS) for about 300,000 people came over the objection of senior diplomats.

Diplomats argued strongly against ending TPS and forcing people to choose between remaining illegally or returning to countries dealing with poverty and, in many cases, extremely high rates of violence.

“The Trump administration is ignoring its own experts’ policy recommendations. It is turning a blind eye to facts. It is creating chaos in our immigration system,” said Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum. “These decisions will make legal immigrants return home to countries so violent that others are fleeing them as we speak — or remain here without status.

“Combined with its rescission of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the administration has started the clock ticking for 1 million taxpayers whose legal status will be revoked. None of this helps American workers and communities.

“Congress should respond with bills that protect TPS recipients, Dreamers and our borders. If the Trump administration does not want to protect American values, Congress must lead.”
