Path for immigration bill remains uncertain in U.S. House

May 19, 2013 - Dallas Morning News

Even if the Senate passes an immigration bill currently before one of its committees, the legislation will face serious roadblocks in the House. But immigration advocates aren’t giving up hope. They say the House will have to confront the issue of immigrants already in the country illegally. “In order for immigration reform to pass, both parties have to own the solution,” said Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum, a policy group that supports a path to citizenship.

US lawmakers reach deal on pathway to citizenship for undocumented migrants

May 17, 2013 - The Guardian

Hopes that America's 11 million undocumented migrants might be granted a pathway to US citizenship have risen significantly after a bipartisan group of politicians in the House of Representatives reached a tentative deal on reforming the country's immigration laws. Though details of the proposals are yet to be disclosed, they are understood to broadly echo those enshrined in the Senate bill, with a pathway to citizenship coupled with a toughening of security at the Mexican border.

Advocates say recent scandals won’t derail immigration reform bill

May 17, 2013 - Voxxi

Pro-immigration reform advocates say they don’t suspect efforts to pass an immigration reform bill this year could be derailed by the recent storm of scandals. Instead, they say the momentum to approve legislation to overhaul the nation’s broken immigration system is unstoppable.

Evangelicals advocating for immigration reform

May 17, 2013 - The Columbus Dispatch

“It made me think, if I had been a pastor or a church member back in the ’60s, would I have marched for people for civil rights or would I have stood on the sidelines?” Carl Ruby said. “I don’t want to have to explain to my grandkids someday, ‘Why were you on the wrong side of history on an important civil-rights issue?’ And I felt like immigration was the issue.” Ruby now works for the National Immigration Forum and was in central Ohio this week drumming up support for its new initiative, Bibles, Badges and Business for Immigration Reform.

Senators amending immigration reform in a ‘bipartisan manner’

May 15, 2013 - Voxxi

Immigration reform advocates say they don’t believe the immigration reform bill is becoming more conservative as the mark up process continues in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Instead, they say they are pleased to see that the core parts — including the path to citizenship — of the immigration legislation are being protected. They also say the proceedings to amend the bill thus far show clear signs that some bipartisanship cooperation is taking place.

With a visit to the White House complex and a session for national reporters, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims on Tuesday enlisted in the campaign for a comprehensive immigration bill. "We've been talking about immigration reform for decades," Mims said, "and this bill gets something done." Amplifying her message, Mims also contributed to a pro-immigration bill telephone conference call with reporters, organized by the National Immigration Forum as part of what the group calls the "Bible, Badges and Business" coalition for immigration reform.

Advocates tout immigration reform in Aspen

May 14, 2013 - Aspen Times

National immigration reform isn’t just a way “out of the shadows” for some 11 million undocumented workers in the U.S., but would bring economic benefits and help in the fight against crime, according to a panel of business, government and law-enforcement leaders who convened Monday morning in Aspen. The half-day forum at the St. Regis Resort came as Congress takes up a bipartisan reform measure brought forward by the so-called “Gang of Eight” in the U.S. Senate, a group that includes U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado.

Love Thy Stranger as Thyself

May 11, 2013 - New York Times

IMMIGRATION reform is not a liberal idea. It is good, old-fashioned conservative policy — at least that’s what its supporters want the Republican faithful to believe. The Republican Party has “historically been pro-immigration,” Grover Norquist, the anti-tax activist, saidafter the 2012 election. The National Immigration Forum declares that America needs reform that “celebrates freedom and values hard work.”

Paper on Immigrant I.Q. Dogs Critic of Overhaul

May 08, 2013 - New York Times

The revelation that a co-author of a Heritage Foundation study critical of the Senate’s bipartisan immigration proposal had recently argued that Hispanic immigrants are less intelligent than white Americans touched off a furor on Wednesday, undercutting the conservative foundation’s attempt to become a major force in the immigration debate. “Whether you agree or disagree with the Heritage study, what their co-author believes is downright insulting and shameful,” said Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum, a group that has mobilized support for the bill.
