House Supplemental Bills: An Affront to our Nation’s Values

August 01, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on a package of bills to respond to the situation on the border.

The bills would weaken protections for children fleeing violence, provide next-to-no funding for immigration judges and legal representation, waste valuable National Guard resources, and coldly end DACA for future and current DREAMers.

Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum, made the following statement on the bills under consideration by the House of Representatives:

"What the House has proposed is an affront to our values as a nation. It’s a tragic answer to a crisis that needs to be solved in a compassionate manner today.

"Congress must preserve legal protections for these young kids. It should not weaken the protections of the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act. And it should meet the kids with open hearts, not National Guard troops.

"Ending DACA is a political ploy unrelated to the crisis at hand. It uses 500,000 intrepid young women and men as collateral. And in turn, we accomplish nothing in mitigating the crisis on our border.

"First, let’s fund the respective agencies to meet the crisis head-on and with compassion.

"Then, when Congress returns from recess, it can restart its debate on immigration reform and ensure this never happens again."
