The Future Prosperity of the United States Depends on the Succesful Integration of Today's Newcomers
Washington, DC – The following is a statement issued by Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum, a pro-immigrant advocacy organization in Washington, DC:
Today’s release of the Census Bureau’s projections for increased diversity in the United States confirms that this nation of immigrants continues to be the great hope on the horizon and a land of opportunity for all who seek the American Dream. From the Germans of the 1880’s to the Italians of the 1920’s to the Chinese of today or the Mexicans of tomorrow, those from around the world have enriched our culture and ensured our prosperity.
Immigrants bring new ideas, and in turn these new ideas become the engine for America’s economic, technologic and academic growth. It has always been, and continues to be, in our nation’s best interest to embrace diversity and inclusion as core values that promote innovation and advancement.
The latest Census projections show us that the future holds the promise of more of the same: Immigrants and their children will keep America strong. Déjà vu all over again.
With America leaning more heavily in the future on a diverse workforce, it is imperative we remove impediments to the full integration of immigrants and their children.
Today’s Wall Street Journal highlighted the proactive steps Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Washington have taken to integrate their New American communities. Clearly, success of states, cities and towns rests on the inclusion and promotion of the opportunities that lie with diversity.
And at the federal level, Senator Clinton and Congressman Honda have introduced the Strengthening Communities Through Education and Integration Act, legislation that will help newcomers integrate into America’s social and economic fabric through English language education, civics instruction and supports research on adult learning and literacy.
Today’s Census projections point to the opportunities and successes that lie ahead. American society continues to be an example—offering the world a successful model of economic and social integration, bringing together people from every corner of the earth in a way that they and their children can prosper.
