Revised Executive Order Remains the Wrong Approach

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Trump signed a revised executive order today that bans all travel from six countries and freezes refugee resettlement.

The revised order follows the Ninth Circuit’s unanimous decision Feb. 9 to block the initial executive order.

The new version, to take effect March 16, suspends entry of citizens and nationals from six Muslim-majority countries — Sudan, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia and Yemen — for 90 days. Unlike the previous order, this ban does not include those from Iraq and does not apply to lawful permanent residents, dual nationals with passports issued by countries that are not banned and those already approved for travel to the U.S.

The order also suspends the entire refugee admission program for 120 days and limits refugee admissions to 50,000 for fiscal year 2017. Refugees that the State Department has already scheduled for travel are not expected to be affected by the order.

The following is a statement by Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum:

“Focusing on these six countries does not strengthen national security. Even as revised, this order will make us less safe because it feeds the narrative from terrorist groups that the U.S. is opposed to Islam. It undermines U.S. global leadership by making other countries question whether we are still welcoming toward refugees and Muslims.

“There is a better way to enhance national security through strengthening internal processes, continuing to gather good intelligence and having accurate information.

“The executive order is a first step in realizing Trump’s commitment since December 2015 to enact a ban on Muslim immigration. That undermines our national security and flies in the face of our Constitution.

“Our concerns are not just constitutional but about the values we hold dear as a country. As America and Americans, who do we want to be?”
