The House GOP introduced legislation to create mandatory e-verify for the entire country. The House also passed a DHS spending bill for next year. In the Senate two bills were introduced to protect refugees and workers. Around the country, the Administration’s “Secure Communities” program is generating opposition.

On May 10th the President made a major speech in El Paso on the need for immigration reform. In Congress, the DREAM Act was re-introduced in the House and Senate. The Administration announced procedures to protect workers from deportation in employer-focused immigration enforcement actions.

The released documents reveal that, even within DHS, there have been conflicting views about whether communities may opt not to participate in Secure Communities.
