On May 21, the Senate Judiciary Committee completed its work on the immigration reform bill, and reported the bill out of Committee with strong bipartisan support. The vote was 13 to 5. This update contains a summary of amendments considered on May 20 and 21 to interior enforcement sections, and sections having to do with the legalization program and legal immigration.

On May 16, the Senate Judiciary Committee finished consideration of amendments having to do with Title IV of the Senate’s comprehensive immigration reform bill. The committee also finished consideration of amendments to Title III relating to the electronic worker verification system before adjourning for the week.

On day two of the Senate Judiciary Committee markup of immigration reform legislation, the members of the committee considered amendments to Title IV of the bill, containing provisions relating to temporary workers. Many amendments were accepted, but all amendments that would unravel the Senate’s compromise were rejected.

This policy update contains a summary of Senate Judiciary Committee action on the first day of markup of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. Focusing on Title I, border enforcement, the committee considered 32 amendments and accepted 21. All of the amendments that would have violated the bipartisan compromise were rejected.
